When someone speaks about the things they’re passionate about — world peace, Luigi Mangione’s exposed ankles, microplastics — it’s usually understandable when things get heated. For Jon Stewart, apparently, getting heated means accidentally injuring yourself. On Monday night’s episode of The Daily Show, the host smashed a coffee mug and cut his hand open while ranting about prescription drug prices. Honestly? I get it.
During the monologue, Stewart touched on federal subsidies to pharmaceutical companies and the high cost of prescription drugs. He showed a clip of former President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris announcing they’d negotiated with companies to lower the price of 10 drugs. A news anchor called it “the first ever negotiation with pharmaceutical companies,” but Stewart wasn’t having it.
“You know what’s so horrible about our system now? And the corruption that lays within it?” he asked the audience. “We’re so fucking numb to it, we actually tout tiny cracks in that exploitation as victory.”
Stewart continued his impassioned rant, grabbed the “World’s Most Dad” mug sitting beside him, and smashed it, turning the once solid object into a jumble of shards puncturing his hand. After he visibly started to bleed, he looked down and said, “I’ll be going to the hospital.” We sure hope he did!
The host appeared later in the episode with his injured hand wrapped in a bandage. Later, he joked about the incident on X, calling it a “bloody good episode.” Stay safe out there, Jon.
