Target has tapped an exciting new group of designers to make exclusive collections: 2022 recipient of Harlem’s Fashion Show Designer of the Year Sergio Hudson, 2021 LVMH finalist Kika Vargas, and former fashion editors Meredith Melling, Valerie Macaulay, and Molly Howard. Last fall, it was Rachel Comey, Victor Glemaud, and Sandy Liang, so you know they are in good company.
Do I need it?
Yes. If you’re looking for designer pieces on a budget, you are bound to find something you like from these collections.
Sizes range from XXS to 4X, and none of these wearable basics go above $70.
We spoke to the designers to learn more about what makes this collection so coveted.
First up is Sergio Hudson, whose celebrity fans include powerhouses like Vice-President Kamala Harris, Beyoncé, and Michelle Obama. Hudson created this collection to be worn everywhere and by the people who have supported him in his career.
“When I do a photo shoot or a show, it’s always high-glam, but at its core, my collection is suits, pants, blouses, things that women will be able to wear to work and feel powerful in, so I wanted to bring that to Target,” Hudson explains.
For Kika Vargas, this collection was all about bringing in the “warmth and vibrancy” from her Colombian heritage — featuring prints Vargas created herself and pieces that are key for layering. The designer is excited for this great opportunity for her small brand to not only extend sizes but her audience as well. (You can usually find her pieces at Saks Fifth Avenue or Nordstrom.)
Last but not least, La Ligne. Well-known for their knits, designers Meredith Melling, Valerie Macaulay, and Molly Howard wanted to feature pieces like their sweaters made for mixing and matching. “We really wanted to translate some of our biggest hits from the main collection and things that are core to us and to our customers,” Macaulay explains.
How Do I Get It?
Blink and you’ll miss it! Mark your calendars (and set your alarms), because on October 9, the collection will be available in select Target stores and on Target.com.
Here is What I Tried
I got a sneak peek at the new collection, and here is what I chose to try on.
This knit bralette from Sergio Hudson was true to size. (I tried a small, which is my usual size in tops.) It was comfy yet supportive. I chose it, because it’s a versatile piece I can wear with the matching pant set or on it’s own under a sheer shirt.
When I put on this cropped blazer, I immediately noticed that the shoulder pads enhanced by silhouette. It’s something I can wear to work, then to dinner after.
This Kika Vargas textured puff-sleeve minidress is breezy and just the right amount of sheer. Pro tip: I’d recommend sizing up for the best fit, since there isn’t a lot of stretch.
I love a set. It makes life so much easier. And I especially love a cozy set. This one was lightweight without being too see-through, so you can comfortably wear it out. I’d recommend sizing up if you prefer an oversize fit.
These trousers are the perfect wide-leg fit, but they’re on the longer side. If you’re petite, you can pair them with heels or platforms.
