Here’s a fun exercise: Think briefly about where you were and what you were thinking about when you were 19 years old. Were you sleeping through college classes? Breaking up with — then drunkenly getting back together with — your shitty ex-girlfriend? Were you telling your parents you wanted to spend a year working with the circus in rural Georgia? Zendaya Coleman, she of childhood Disney fame, is already way ahead of you.
In the aspiring singer, activist, and actress’s new profile for Complex, Zendaya explains that it’s very unlikely that she’ll have a Miley moment, because she insists that she is committed to being “honest with the world,” adding, “There will be no surprises. I’m not suddenly going to be like woo, crazy.” The down-to-earth singer even claims that she is squad-less: “My squad! What is my squad? I don’t really have a squad, I just have friends.” But wise though she may be, Zendaya has no clue how she has been able to keep such a strong head on her shoulders.
“I don’t know why I’m so deep,” she told Complex. “I don’t know! Everybody says I’m like 19 going on 80, honest to god.” Lots of people also said this about me when I was 19, interestingly enough. Next week I will be 93.
