How do you feel about the following phrases? “Have you Kondo-ed?” “I’ve been Kondo-ing, and it’s changing my life.” “That doesn’t really spark joy.” “I can’t believe you haven’t heard of Marie Kondo!” “I lost ten pounds after I Kondo-ed my house.” “Can’t go out tonight! Seeing what sparks joy!”
Are you twitching, or are you ready for another decade of discussing your stuff and all of the life-changing tidying you’ve done? If it’s the latter, you’ll enjoy this tidbit (the rest of you, I’m so sorry, the future will be painful). In yet another rumination on Japanese de-cluttering expert Marie Kondo, we get the background on how her book was conceived: in a publishing course called “How to write bestsellers that will be loved for ten years.” Meaning, in theory, that Kondo’s book has a one-decade shelf life, and we’ve just cleared the first year.
Nine more years of Kondo talk seems like something we can all endure, right? Not so fast: The New Yorker also reveals that we just got an extension, and Kondo has a second book, Spark Joy: An Illustrated Master Class on the Art of Organizing and Tidying Up, coming out in January 2016. Looks like we’ll be carefully folding shirts for the foreseeable future.
