After much debate and uncertainty, the Recording Academy announced that it will be proceeding as scheduled with the 67th annual Grammy Awards. In spite of wildfire devastation in Los Angeles, music’s biggest night is still on for Sunday, February 2, at Crypto.com arena. But it will proceed “with a renewed sense of purpose: raising additional funds to support wildfire relief efforts and honoring the bravery and dedication of first responders who risk their lives to protect ours.” CEO Harvey Mason Jr. stated that the decision was made in consultation with local officials and safety agencies. The awards show will not only “honor the artistry and achievements of our music community but serve as a platform to amplify the spirit of resilience that defines this great city of Los Angeles.”
This year’s Grammy Week will be “condensed,” with industry stakeholders like Universal Music Group, Billboard, and Warner Music canceling parties to redirect attention to relief efforts. The Recording Academy and MusiCares, its charity affiliate, launched the Los Angeles Fire Relief Effort, raising and pledging $2 million in emergency aid for affected music workers. Here’s what else we know.
