Despite a recent shout-out from Donald Trump, it looks like Taylor Swift and Brittany Mahomes are still besties. The drama started last month, when the Chiefs hosted the NFL kickoff game in Kansas City, which obviously included a Swift appearance. The singer cheered on Travis Kelce in a suite alongside his mom, Donna. Not in that suite was Brittany Mahomes, wife of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and someone who is frequently glued to Swift’s side at football games.
Mahomes and Swift have struck up quite the friendship in the last year, and Mahomes has quickly made it into Swift’s inner circle. She got invited to girls’ night, they took their partners out for a double date, and the Mahomes family went out to Rhode Island to hang out at Swift’s beach house. For a moment, it looked like things might actually be getting chilly between the two women.
In August, Mahomes found herself in a sticky situation when it came out that she had liked one of Donald Trump’s Instagram posts. When people called her out for it, she called them “haters” who had “deep rooted issues [they] refuse to heal from childhood.” Perhaps because he noticed she was using his own rhetoric, Trump personally thanked Mahomes for her support.
This is all to say, it wasn’t surprising that she and Swift weren’t sitting next to each other. Mahomes has been outed as a Trump fan, and Swift has a vaguely liberalish image to uphold.
However, the apparent distance between the two was short lived: Swift and Mahomes were spotted together at the U.S. Open men’s final a few days after the Trump shout-out. The women and their partners (and two of the Haim sisters) enjoyed some tennis from a suite at Arthur Ashe Stadium, looking as close as could be. They hugged, they laughed, and after the match the couples all went on a double date at a Mediterranean restaurant in the Meatpacking District. This, of course, was very upsetting to the left-leaning Swifties.
The next week, Trump and Harris had their first (and probably only) debate. Almost immediately after, Swift announced that she would be voting for Harris. In her four-paragraph statement posted on Instagram, Swift wrote that she’d be voting for the vice-president because “she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them.”
“I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos,” Swift wrote to her 283 million followers.
Mahomes got dragged into it the next day, when Trump went on Fox & Friends and declared that he preferred her to Swift. “Well, I actually like Mrs. Mahomes much better. She’s a big Trump fan,” he stated. “I like Brittany. I think Brittany’s great, Brittany got a lot of news last week. She’s a big MAGA fan, that’s the one I like much better than Taylor Swift.”
While this much appreciation from Trump (asked for or not) might put a wedge between some friends, it seems it hasn’t had too much of an effect on Swift and Mahomes. On Monday, the two were spotted hugging and chatting at the Chiefs game.
Any fan fiction about these women no longer being close because of politics was just that: fiction. Did you really think that Swift wouldn’t be friends with a Republican? She’s a billionaire!
