Days after Air Mail published Armie Hammer’s first interview since allegations of abuse, sexual misconduct, and cannibalism fetishes were first brought against him in 2021, Elizabeth Chambers has given an interview of her own. Speaking with Elle about the dissolution of their marriage, she revealed that the former couple saw marriage counselor Esther Perel for most of their time together: “[Esther] always said heartbreak is literally worse than a heroin addiction, and I think about that a lot,” she said.
Chambers and Hammer met in Los Angeles in 2007 and married three years later with Chambers filing for divorce in 2020, citing irreconcilable differences. After accusations about Hammer’s alleged sexual misconduct first began circulating on social media in 2021, Chambers took to Instagram to express support for victims of assault and abuse, saying she was “shocked, devastated, and heartbroken” by the stories from Hammer’s accusers and that she “didn’t realize how much I didn’t know.” Chambers reiterated to Elle that she was “learning things” about Hammer in real time with the public. “I was like, ‘There are no words. What the fuck?’”
Per Elle, the Los Angeles Police Department opened an ongoing investigation into sexual-assault allegations against Hammer in 2021. Prior to that, a separate investigation, in which a woman alleged Hammer had raped her for over four hours in 2017, ended without charges; in his Air Mail interview, Hammer denied the accusations, calling the encounter “consensual non-consent.” For her part, Chambers — who shares two children with Hammer and declined to comment on his Air Mail interview, their former sex life, and his alleged proclivities — says she still spends time with her ex-husband as the two navigate their co-parenting relationship. “I support Armie through his journey and I always will,” she told Elle. “All I’ve ever wanted is for him to be sober, healthy, and happy … All you want is for your children to have two solid parents, right? That’s always the goal, so anything I can do to support that, I will.”
