Timeless Polaroids at Rockaway Beach

For the Cut’s latest Out of the Box feature, six photographers captured their friends wearing some of the season’s best swimsuits. On various getaways during the first weekend of summer, they shot one-piece suits in Brooklyn, Guess halters in New Orleans, and Burberry trunks in Miami. New York photographer Bobby Doherty went from a pink flower bush in Bedford-Stuyvesant to a sunny afternoon on Rockaway Beach.

“I don’t like to bring cameras to the beach because I get paranoid about them getting all messed up with sand,” he says. “Which is why I only shot Polaroids. Polaroids are instant nostalgia, and pictures of people on the beach having fun are also kind of timeless. So it’s really only the bathing suits that tell you when and where you are.”
