Prints on Prints: Fall’s Most Vibrant, Decadent Patterns

So far, the Cut’s Out of the Box — in which we give photographers free rein with a box of garments fresh off the runway — has led us everywhere from the misty fields of Cornwall to the graffitied bluffs of Eureka, Utah, as well as Tokyo, New Orleans, and New Haven. For our latest installment, Los Angeles–based photography collaborative JUCO (run by San Francisco Art Institute grads Julia Galdo and Cody Cloud) trekked out to White Sulphur Springs in West Virginia — home of the legendary white-columned resort, the Greenbrier.

Inspired by mid-century American interior decorator Dorothy Draper — known for her love of color and competing patterns, and who, in addition to redesigning the Greenbrier after World War II, is also responsible for decorating the lobby of the Carlyle — Galdo and Cloud loaded pre-fall designs on a bellhop cart and let their instincts run wild in the 700-room hotel. “Dorothy’s motto was ‘If it looks right, it is right,’ which is something we were practicing while shooting,” explains Galdo. “We would arrive at a spot, I would dress our model, Cody would set up the lights, and we would start shooting. After about 30 minutes or so, we would break it all down, put it back on the cart, and it wheel away — all very run-and-gun.”
