On the occasion of writing her own memoir about coming of age in Ireland, Anjelica Huston selected her seven favorite coming-of-age novels for The Week. The lady’s got timeless taste in many things. Her favorites books include works by Jane Austen, Louisa May Alcott, Charlotte Brontë, and Edith Wharton.
And, of course, some themes emerge. Lots of passionate, tempestuous love stories. Most of her novels involve “independent heroines” (“doomed” or otherwise) and a handful are about man-“beasts” taming women (Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre). Just some art, reflecting life.
