Formal Details: Nicholas Cope Shoots Fall’s Black and White Goods

For our latest edition of Out of the Box, we sent Los Angeles–based photographer Nicholas Alan Cope a box of some of fall’s best monochrome accessories and garments from New York designers. The series is a study of details and abstractions that make you think about texture, structure, depth, and flatness, from a dress floating solo in midair like a Brancusi to a shaggy bolero shot so closely that only rich, enticing tufts of fur fill the frame.

“When I first started out as a photographer, I was primarily shooting commercial architecture and I did a series on Los Angeles,” Cope explained to the Cut. “I can’t help putting in architecture because that’s my comfort zone.
