Icy green, blue, and purple eye shadows are usually reserved for teenagers and octogenarians, but two of today’s spring shows made us reconsider frosty pastels. At Creatures of the Wind, Nars director of global artistry James Boehmer said he was inspired by the forties woman, tweaked for modern times. Instead of standard blue eye shadow and red lips, Boehmer used Nars’s Icelandic Duo, a minty opalescent eye shadow, and paired it with a matte orange lipstick, the Timanfaya Satin Lip Pencil (out this spring). When applied in a thin, transparent layer, the shadow takes on a futuristic shimmer, contrasting the orange lip for an avant-garde look.
At Costello Tagliapietra, M.A.C. makeup artist Maki Ryoke took a page from pop art by applying bold swaths of M.A.C pigment in two custom formulas, a pretty lilac (better for dark skin tones) and a lime green. But the addition of a plump, glossy lip kept things “sexual and mature,” as opposed to ready for the mall.
